Leo Brunschwiler (* 1955 in Uzwil SG) lives and works in Zurich since 1994. He attended the free spatial design class at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Basel and completed his postgraduate studies in 'contemporary art' at the IKG of the University of Bern. He has been working as a freelance artist since 1979. In addition, he conducted seminars and workshops on creativity at various adult education institutions, including the BWI of the ETH Zurich, for 3 decades. At times he worked as a gardener, barman and fitness trainer. Before he could turn to his own art work again to 100 % from 2018, he returned to his first profession and worked again some years at public and private schools as a subject teacher for visual design.
Leo Brunschwiler has received awards from the city and canton of St.Gallen and a scholarship from the "Stiftung Erna und Curt Burgauer" Zurich. In 1990 he was awarded the studio in the "Cité Internationale des Arts" in Paris and in 1991 the exchange studio in New York. Among the most important works are the large wall drawings in the Raiffeisen Center and in the Tonhalle St.Gallen, as well as the drawings in Octavio Paz's Nobel Prize volume for Literature, Suche nach einer Mitte, published by Coron Verlag in 1991.
In his current works, Leo Brunschwiler deals mainly with the threat and destruction of nature and climate change caused by man's inappropriate behaviour towards the environment. To his works he says: "I draw what I love, what touches me, what affects me".
